Children's Care, Learning & Development BTEC Level 3 Diploma at Grantham College

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 national Diploma in Children’s Play Learning & Development is a two year Full-time Level 3 programme of study aimed at students 16 years old and over, and on successful completion you will be awarded a Level 3 qualification. You will be given the opportunity to develop your skills and an understanding of working with children and young people aged between 0 - 8 years - knowledge of this age range will be gained through participation in a variety of subjects and work placements. 

If you want to work in the Early Years Sector this course is designed for you.

Course content

It covers a wide range of compulsory subjects that are relevant to the Early year’s sector. Subjects covered include:

  • Child Development
  • Play and Learning
  • Meeting Children’s Physical Needs
  • Health and Safety in Early Years Settings
  • Working with Parents and Others in Early Years
  • Supporting Children’s Speech, Communication and Language
  • Supporting Children’s Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Safeguarding in Early Years
  • Observation Assessment and Planning
  • Supporting Children’s Literacy and Numeracy
  • Reflective Practice
  • The Early Years Foundation Stage
  • Research Skills

There are also additional optional specialist units you will study to enhance your qualification in the sector. You may also have the opportunity to undertake First Aid and Food Hygiene qualifications.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSE’s at grade C or above this must include Maths and English.


This qualification is assessed by an external exam, assignments, observations and work experience. Students will be required to undertake a minimum of 750 hours work experience as part of their programme of study.

Financial information

Full Time Further Education courses are free for those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course.  Exam resit fees may apply if and when applicable.

Employment, Foundation Degree in Families, Health and Communities, to study a range of degree programmes, Teacher training.

Further information

Suitable for students who wish to pursue a career in the Early Years Sector or Teaching training. It is an alternative to the A level route providing valuable work experience to working with children.
