BTEC Level 3: Applied Science at JC6: Hinckley Academy and John Cleveland Sixth Form Centre

Course description

BTEC Forensic Investigations is a vocational science course focussed on developing the knowlege and practical skills required by people who work in a range of scientific fields. During this course you will have the opportunity to gain specific understanding, knowledge and skills that are relevant to a variety of scientific careers, such as forensic scientist, drug researcher or science technician.

In the first year students develop their understanding of the fundamentals of science and their practical scientific procedures. In year two you will go on to apply your practical skills to detailed forensic related modules such as forensic fire investigation, forensic traffic collision investigations and forensic photography.  

Course content

Consider Forensic Science if:

  • You want to go on to work in a scientific or research-based job.
  • You prefer practical, investigative learning.
  • You enjoy science and want to extend your skills.

Entry requirements

JC6 general entry requirements, including:

  • Minimum of grade 5 in both Core and Additional Science OR two grade 5's in single sciences.
  • Grade 5 or above in Mathematics.

Future opportunities

Forensic Science works well with health, caring, sports or other science subjects. It also combines well with other BTEC courses, enabling learners to focus on developing the organisational skills required to be successful in assignment-based courses.

It is a good choice for anyone wanting to go straight into a scientific job or training, as well as offering a very useful qualification for many university courses, including nursing, sport, forensic science, criminology and a range of science foundation degrees.
