Further Mathematics AS/A2 Level at Alexandra Park School
Further Mathematics AS is a complete extra AS level. There will be 4 lessons per fortnight. Further Mathematics can only be taken by students who are also taking Mathematics A level. It would suit students who are not sure what their fourth or fifth subject will be in Year 12, and who are likely to want a very good grounding in Mathematics to get into their chosen university course. There will be a significant amount of independent learning involved. Further Mathematics modules are not harder than the modules which make up A level Mathematics; they cover other topics which are outside the A level curriculum but which are interesting, vital aspects of mathematical knowledge.
Further Mathematics at A2 has been taught at APS for several years, with excellent results. Most students who take A2 Further Mathematics are aiming to study Mathematics at university, or a related discipline such as Science or Engineering. Success in Further Mathematics requires a significant amount of self-motivated independent study.
The AS is a one year course consisting of three modules, of equal weight.
The full A level is gained by completing three more modules, again of equal weight, in the second year.
5 A* to C grades, and Grade A or above at GCSE Higher Tier Mathematics, however an A* is recommended for those considering this course.
Further Mathematics is very useful for university entrance in Mathematics, Engineering and Electronics degrees.
