Course description


People who:

Are interested in learning about science that has a real life context (vocational study rath er than purely academic).

Prefer qualifications that contain a coursework component rather than solely examinations. 

Enjoy carrying out research and finding inform ation from a variety of sources. 

Enjoy experiments and improving practical skills.

Want to develop a better understanding of the key concepts in science and learn about science in the modern world. 

Enjoy going on visits and listening to presentatio ns from outside expert speakers.

Are interested in how science and t echnology can improve our lives .

Course content

This qualification is at A - Level standard and provides students with a broad understanding of vocationally - related sciences to support progress to higher education or employment. Studying this qualification will enable students to develop their knowledge and understanding of scientific principles, as well as those scientific practical skills recognised by higher education institutions an d employers to be most important. The qualification also offers students an opportunity to develop transferable skills such as problem solving, research and communication as part of their applied learning.

Entry requirements

C + in any science subject


There are 6 mandatory units, which are equally weighted (16.7%). Three of the units are coursework based and internally assessed. The remaining three are assessed at the end of the course through an external examination, including questions on pre - release material. The units are graded Pass, Meri t or Distinction . The overall qualif ication is graded as P, M, D or D*.
