AS/A2 French at Bridgewater High School
What will I study?
The course will provide the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills acquired at GCSE level and use the language learned in a wide range of contexts. You will gain a useful insight into French history, contemporary society and French culture.
In year 12 the course splits up in to four main areas: Media, Family and Relationships, Popular Culture and Healthy Living. Sub-topics include TV, advertising and the latest communication technology; relationships and changing attitudes towards marriage; the importance of cinema, music, fashion and celebrities and issues concerning drugs and alcohol, sport and exercise. In year 13 there are 3 broad areas of study, namely Environment, Multicultural Society and Contemporary Social Issues. Topics include issues about pollution and protecting the planet, racism and immigration, ethical issues raised by developments in science and technology and inequalities of wealth in both the developed and the Third World. You will also study the life and works of a French film director and a French novelist.

How will I be assessed?
Unit 1: Listening and reading examination with an essay question at the end
Unit 2: Speaking examination
Unit 3: A longer, more difficult version of the AS paper
Unit 4: A 15 minute long speaking examination
5 GCSE at A* - C or equivalent, including French preferably at grade "B" or above.
