Physics A Level at West Kirby Grammar School
WHY CHOOSE PHYSICS?
This course will suit students who wish to develop their interest and enthusiasm in the physics of all that is around them. In what other subject can you look at the way in which quarks are fundamental particles then try to explain how the universe began? Students will develop skills and knowledge that are universally accepted and highly sought after by universities and employers. Such practical, analytical and problem solving skills are invaluable.
CONTENT - A2
Unit 4: Newtonian World- Newton's Laws and momentum; Circular motion, gravitational fields and oscillations; Thermal Physics.
Unit 5: Fields, Particles and Frontiers of Physics:- Electric and Magnetic fields; Capacitors and Exponential Decay; Nuclear Physics; Medical Imaging; Modelling the Universe.
Unit 6: Practical Skills in Physics.
- In order to progress onto Advanced Level courses you must achieve at least a D grade at AS Level in three subjects (excluding General Studies)

Units 4 and 5 will be assessed by Unit tests in June of Year 13. Unit 6 is assessed internally using tasks set by OCR.
WHAT CAN I DO WITH PHYSICS?
Qualifications in Physics are extremely useful for a wide range of careers. Many employers value the skills which are developed during the course. A level Physics students go on to scientific or technological careers; engineering; product design; medicine; dentistry; other medically related careers including opthalmics and medical physics; veterinary science; teaching and lecturing. An increasing number of students are involved in other careers including architecture, law, computer science, accountancy and journalism.
WHAT DO I NEED TO START THE COURSE?
You need ability, interest and enthusiasm in the subject. You will be expected to have a grade B or above in GCSE Physics or in both Science and Additional Science GCSE.
