Health and Social Care BTEC First Extended Certificate (School Leavers) Level 2 at Croydon College

Course description

This course is designed for people interested in developing knowledge, skills and understanding of the caring services.

This course includes the opportunity to undertake work experience which provides you with first-hand understanding of the workplace, giving you the chance to develop your skills and knowledge as well as enabling you to gain employment within health and social care contexts.

Topics covered on the course include: effective communication in health and social care; human development; health and social care values; the impact of nutrition; equality and diversity in health and social care; and social influences on health and well-being.

You will be taught in a classroom environment using a range of different formats including group work, IT and independent study. Support is provided for a wide range of academic and personal needs, ensuring you get the most out of your course and your time at the College.

Good English and maths skills are essential for success in studying and for future employment prospects and so Croydon College ensures that these skills are developed in all learning opportunities.

It’s also important to have good English and maths qualifications and so all students will study English and maths and work towards an appropriate level and type of qualification including GCSE. This will be part of all 16-18 year old students’ Study Programme alongside their main vocational or academic qualification and will be discussed with students at interview.

Course content

To enhance your learning on the course, we welcome interesting and thought provoking guest speakers, hold conferences, take part in charity events and go on day trips to exciting and relevant places. These activities ensure that your experience of Health and Social Care at Croydon college is a rich and varied one.

You will be taught and supported by a health and social care teaching team who are from a wide range of professional backgrounds including nurses and substance misuse practitioners. They will use this knowledge to help you gain an insight into what it is like to work in the health and social care industry.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade D-G, one being English or maths, or a Level 1 related qualification.

English and maths assessed at Entry Level 3 or above.

Applicants will need to complete a DBS (Disclosure Barring Service) check before starting this course.


This course has two externally assessed units. The remaining units will be assessed through a range of activities including written tasks, role play, presentations and posters.

All the assignments will be written by lecturing team and will be based on the unit assessment criteria to enable you  to produce high quality work.

Future opportunities

Upon completing the course successfully you may choose to continue your studies and progress to a Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care.  

Alternatively you may decide to progress onto an apprenticeships or into employment.
