Retail - BTEC First Diploma at Samuel Lister Academy

Course description

You will be learning about all aspects of retail throughout the 2 years of studying in Year 10 and Year 11.

Course content

The main/core topics that students will study include:

Unit 1 - Introduction to Retail

Unit 2 - Retail Selling & Customer Service

Unit 3 - Merchandising & Display for Retail Sales

The Specialist topics that students will study include:

Unit 4 - Advertising & Sales in Retail

Unit 7 - Fashion Retailing

Unit 9 - Introduction to careers in Retail

There are many real world benefits from studying this course. This course provides in-depth research into the world of retail.

Entry requirements

There is no fixed entry requirement for Retail. You will choose to do this course at the end of Year 9. If you do decide to study the course, you can progress onto further education.


In Year 10, you will get to visit a major retail outlet, Meadowhall in Sheffield. Throughout both Year 10 & Year 11 guest speakers will also be invited to the School from Retail outlets. Seeing how businesses run in real life brings the course to life.

Future opportunities

Students studying the vocational Retail course will get an understanding of the Retail world and will have the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills for progression into either higher education or the workplace. The retail sector embraces a range of careers and opportunities for people with diverse interests and ambitions. From shop work to management, PR to Finance, Specialising in Fashion, Sports, Food and a whole host of areas, careers in retail are international, lucrative and wide ranging. These careers are as attractive for graduates as they are for school leavers. Most retail companies also offer recruitment schemes, seeking out promising individuals. Further higher education opportunities available in a school/college. Progression to A Levels or equivalent, for example, BTEC National Diploma.
