Product Design A Level at Clacton County High School

Course description

This course will suit students who are creative, passionate and who seek an exciting product design career. Using ‘real life’ projects, you will learn in a studio environment how to communicate your ideas through design and writing and verbally through discussion and feedback tasks. You will be encouraged to develop a strong design identity, to explore your ideas through experimentation and develop your ability to be innovative.

The Product Design ‘Design Pod’ offer students a chance to work in a Design Studio situation. Here they can bounce ideas off one another as well as be surrounded by like-minded creative students. Computers equipped with design packages are on hand to support students in developing their ideas and learn specific skills relevant to industry. The department is fitted with state of the art technology in the form of a 3D printer and a laser machine to help improve the speed and accuracy of prototyping.

Students taking this course will develop an understanding of materials and components. They should understand why these are used in specific applications with particular emphasis on the life-cycle of products including manufacture, use and disposal. Students will undertake a simple design-and-make project and apply theories in design and manufacturing.
