Musical Theatre Level 3 Applied Diploma - Extended Certificate at Long Road Sixth Form College

Course description

This is an exciting course, which is designed for students who have a passion for Musical Theatre and an interest in developing a range of performance skills in all three performing arts; drama, dance and music. There is an emphasis is on the development of high-level professional performance skills through a range of practical settings and styles, rehearsing and performing throughout the course. This will be supported by relevant theory. The course mainly consists of practical training and provides numerous opportunities for performance, both on stage and to camera. You will be encouraged to gain further experience through college enrichment and outside college both individually and as a member of a group.

Professional workshops: You will work with visiting practitioners and will attend performances and workshops by professional companies at external venues.

This course is equivalent to one A level.

Course content

Across the two years you will develop your skills in all three art forms, working on technique and your general understanding of the development of the genre in Year 1, before building upon these skills and investigating different styles of performance in Year 2.

There are four units:

  • Investigating Practitioner’s Work
  • Developing Skills and Techniques for Live Performance
  • Group Performance Workshop
  • Musical Theatre Techniques

The course will contain many performances, but will culminate in a large scale musical theatre production.


You will be assessed by a combination of internally-assessed assignments and externally-set and marked assessments.

Entry requirements

At least 5 Grade 4s or equivalent in a range of subjects at GCSE level, including in GCSE English and, if taken, GCSE Drama or Performing Arts.


A Merit grade in an OCR or BTEC Certificate in a related area (6-credit qualification), and a Grade 4 or above in GCSE English. Students with a Distinction grade in a related area (6-credit qualification) may be considered with a Grade 3 in GCSE English.

Ideally you will have already performed in amateur theatre groups or school shows. You will also be required to take part in an audition where we will assess your potential.

Future opportunities

The Musical Theatre Level 3 Diploma can lead to further study in the field at university or specialised performing arts centres. The course is ideal for students who would like to follow a career in an aspect of the performing arts.  It is also of benefit in careers such as education and training; public relations and marketing; and media and broadcasting.
