Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy NVQ Level 1 at Chelmsford College

Course description

Level 1 will suit you if you are new to the industry and have little or no experience of hairdressing. You will study units in health and safety, prepare and maintain working areas, assist with reception duties, working with others, shampoo and condition, assist with colouring, blow drying, nail services and day make up.

Entry requirements

To have completed secondary education up to and including year 11.


You will be assessed through observation of your practical skills and online tests. You should be prepared to give and receive treatments and hair services and will also be required to develop your own client base for assessment.

Financial information

Learners will need to purchase uniform and kit from the college suppliers.

Expected costs are approximately £175

Future opportunities

The purpose of this qualification is to develop your skills as a Hairdressing Assistant and will enable you to progress to further learning at a higher level.

    • The Lee Stafford Hair and Beauty Academy is based in the city centre on Rainsford Road. It is home to our Hair and Beauty departments that are run in partnership with the famous Essex hairdresser. 

      It has everything you would expect from a modern, well-equipped hair and beauty salon - and much more besides. Here you will find excellent facilities for study with teaching facilities in both hair and beauty and two classrooms equipped with the latest technology, as well as an enjoyable and relaxing experience for the clients. Laid out over three floors, the campus is a short walk from the main bus station and railway station and even houses a 20m catwalk/runway which are used for our Hair & Beauty end of year shows.

      The campus also houses a Learning Centre, a silent study area and a break out area for students to relax and socialise.
