Course description

BTEC Travel and Tourism is a qualification that is highly valued by the travel industry because of the knowledge and skills that are gained during the two year course. It tells potential employers that you have well-developed research skills, excellent time management skills, that you are able to work in a team to achieve set goals, meet deadlines and that you have the necessary ‘people’ skills to manage others effectively. You will be encouraged to develop a range of skills that you will require for a managerial career in the future through a range of varied and interesting projects which are tailored to match your interests and ambitions. You will have the opportunity to complete a relevant work experience placement to help you plan your career path and use your newly acquired skills in an industry setting.

Course content

In the first year you will begin by learning about the business of travel and tourism and the breadth of opportunity of the industry. You will then complete a range of diverse units that include;

  • Customer Service Skills
  • Marketing Travel and Tourism Products and Services
  • Events, Conferences and Exhibitions
  • Hospitality and  Tour Operations
  • Investigating the Cruise Industry
  • Working as a Holiday Representative
  • Employment in Travel and Tourism
  • European and Long haul Travel

You will also have the opportunity to complete a relevant work experience placement to help you plan your career path and use your newly acquired skills in an industry setting. We have many links with local employers who value the high calibre of the students we send out to them. This gives you the chance to impress and maybe the offer of employment for the future and for part time jobs whilst you are at college.

Entry requirements

At least 5 Cs at GCSE, including at least a grade 5 in English Language or a Merit at Level 2 (if studied).

Assessment

Exam: 30%

Coursework: 70%

Financial information

The department offers lots of varied enrichment opportunities, with regular day visits linked to each unit, a yearly trip to New York, a yearly trip to London and many guest visitors from the industry.

Future opportunities

Thinking beyond the obvious careers of cabin crew and holiday representatives, Travel & Tourism can lead to a range of careers including event management, wedding planning, hospitality management, travel agency management, public relations and travel journalism. Many of our students progress onto university to study Events Management, International Hospitality Management, Tourism and Languages, or Tourism Marketing. Many students also decide to look for employment opportunities and apprenticeships straight after College.
