History is our most powerful tool for understanding how people create and respond to events, how power,
property and prejudice are manipulated and experienced, and is thus our key to understanding our own world.

Unit 1. Change and Consolidation: How effectively did the early Tudors establish and consolidate their
In this unit you will focus on assessing change and continuity in England between 1483-1529 after the dynastic
conflict between the Houses of York and Lancaster known as the Wars of the Roses. This will be done by
contrasting the reign of the Yorkist Richard III with the reigns of both Henry VII and Henry VIII. You will
investigate how these early Tudor monarchs consolidated their power.
Unit 2. Historical issues: The Reign of Peter the Great of Russia 1682-1725
In this unit you will study the reign of Peter the Great in depth. You will be assessing the nature and extent of
Peter’s achievements. You will learn to make judgements on the significance of the role of the individual in
comparison to other factors. A coherent theme linking this unit and unit one is the study of continuity and
change within Peter’s reign.
Unit 3. The State and the People: The Triumph of Elizabeth - Britain 1541-1603
This unit further promotes an understanding of change and continuity over a period of 60 years of British
history, during which the power of the Tudor state was strengthened both at home and abroad. As a result of
the study of the period you will be in a position to explain the issues and ideas that shaped the relationships
between the people and the state between the so called ‘Mid-Tudor Crisis’ and the death of Elizabeth I.
Unit 4. Historical Enquiry: Power and Authority in Early Imperial Rome 44BC-AD69
In this unit you will look at how the Roman Republic collapsed into a catastrophic era of civil wars threatening
the Roman world’s very existence. You will study how one of the warring generals, Augustus, used an
extraordinary combination of military power, political guile and ingenuity to establish himself as the first Roman
emperor while pretending that he had restored the Republic. From this point you will explore how Augustus’s
system and image of power proved so durable it was greater than the personalities of his successors,
including Caligula and Nero, and emerged as one of the greatest legacies of the ancient world with a decisive
influence on early modern European monarchs.
