Course description

The course is taught through 10 themes:

1.What is business?

2. Managers, leadership and decision making.

3. Decision making to improve marketing performance.

4. Decision making to improve operational performance.

5. Decision making to improve financial performance.

6. Decision making to improve human resource performance.

7. Analysing the strategic position of a business.

8. Choosing strategic direction.

9. Strategic methods: how to pursue strategies.

10. Managing strategic change.

Entry requirements

Entrants to the course must have achieved at least 5x 9-4 at GCSE subjects, preferably including English and Maths.  It is not essential to have studied Business before, however it would be advantageous if Business BTEC or GCSE had been completed. 

Assessment

Paper 1: Themes 1 – 6 are assessed through a written exam worth 80 marks.  The paper is 1 hour 30 minutes long and is a combination of multiple choice, short answer questions and longer data response questions.  It is worth 50% of the AS.

Paper 2: Themes 1 – 6 are assessed through a written exam worth 80 marks.  The paper is 1 hour 30 minutes long and consists of one case study with approximately seven questions.  It is worth 50% of the AS.    

Year 2 :

Paper 1: Themes 1 – 10 assessed through a written exam worth 100 marks.  The paper is 2 hours long and is a combination of multiple choice, short answer questions and essay questions.  It is worth 33.3% of the A level.

Paper 2: Themes 1 – 10 assessed through a written exam worth 100 marks.  The paper is 2 hours long and consists of data response questions.  It is worth 33.3% of the A2.

Paper 3: Themes 1 – 10 assessed through a written exam worth 100 marks.  The paper is 2 hours long and consists of one case study with approximately six questions. It is worth 33.3% of the A2.
