A Level Geology at St Thomas More High School for Boys

Course description

Studying Geology at AS Level is ideal for anyone who is interested in developing their understanding of the structure and dynamics of the earth. It is a science that includes elements of Physical Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics and would link well with any of these subjects. The material covered is varied and includes topics ranging from Volcanology to the History of the Earth. Fieldwork is emphasised on this course and, as such, students in Year 12 will have the opportunity to participate in a 3 day field course and Year 13 a 5 day field trip to the Isle of Arran.

Course content

On the course, you will learn about the following; Structure of the Earth; Plate Tectonics; Seismology; Volcanology; Mineralogy; Igneous, Metamorphic and Sedimentary Rocks; Fossils; Applied Geology and Geological Mapping. Ice ages, Dinosaurs and how Britain has changed.

Entry requirements

Students wishing to take AS Level Geology need to be enthusiastic, well motivated and have preferably achieved B grades at GCSE in the Sciences and/or Geography

1. Foundation Geology
2. Investigative Geology
3. Geology and the Human Environment
(Assessed as 3 modular exams in summer term)

A2 Units
1. Interpreting the Geological Record
2. Geological Themes
3. Investigative Geology- (Coursework)

Future opportunities

Geologists are in great demand and Geology can lead to a range of university courses, including Geology, Geography and the more specialised scientific fields of Volcanology, Oceanography and Palaeontology.
