IT Foundation Level 1 at Newbury College

Course description

If you have an interest in Computing and want to gain a qualification this level 1 programme is a good place to start. The Level 1 Diploma in IT is a one year course designed to introduce you to working with different programmes and understanding how computers work. The aim of the course is to introduce learners to IT using real world situations and to reflect on the ethical, social and cultural issues surrounding all aspects of IT. It will also give you guidelines on the safe use of computers and internet tools.



You will study a range of units on this programme which could include subjects such as,

  • Word processing software
  • IT communication fundamentals
  • Presentation software
  • Imaging software
  • IT user fundamentals
  • IT security for users
  • Set up an IT system
  • Database software
  • Spreadsheet software

You will also complete a skills project which will build your confidence and your employability skills as well as covering subjects such as equality and safeguarding which are designed to broaden your knowledge of these subjects and help with your employment potential.

Entry requirements

Level 1: Students will need to have four GCSE passes at grade E or above, preferably including Maths and English. Alternatively, students will be accepted on to the course if they have an equivalent vocational qualification at pass or above, and Functional Skills Maths and English, preferably at Entry Level 3. All students must have achieved, or show the ability to achieve, Maths and English to GCSE grade E or equivalent. Where a student has not yet fulfilled this requirement, a Functional Skills qualification is a mandatory part of this course.


This course is continually assessed using various methods including the completion of a portfolio of evidence. Assignments set will have an agreed hand in date that will need to be met in order to meet the awarding body guidelines. Some units will also need you to complete externally set and marked assessment material in addition to your portfolio work.

Future opportunities

This programme gives you a solid foundation to progress on to a Level 2 programme or apprenticeship, where a good understanding of a variety of software packages is required.
