Uniformed Services Level 1 Diploma at Basingstoke College of Technology

Course description

The public services qualification aims to provide an opportunity for learners with an interest in a uniformed service to explore this area of employment in a practical way. It will also develop learners' skills and personal qualities in preparation for all areas of employment. There will be opportunities for learners to develop problem-solving skills.

The course consists of seven units:

  • Investigate employment opportunities in the Uniformed Services
  • Well-being and physical fitness
  • Team working skills
  • Developing self-discipline
  • Carry out essential map reading and navigation
  • Participate in competitive sports
  • Participate in adventurous activities

Students may also choose to study for a GCSE to increase their qualifications, or to resit a previous GCSE subject to improve a grade. To enhance employment opportunities the course may also have additional qualifications built into the programme.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade E or above, including English and Maths.


The course is continuously assessed by both practical and written assignments, there will be no final examination. Learners will also have the chance to gain practical experience in our onsite gym.

Financial information

If you are aged 16-18, tuition and registration fees are free. 
If you are aged 19 or over, tuition and registration fees are payable at the start of each year of study; please ask for details.
If you are aged 24 or over, you may be eligible for a Student Loan to assist with your fees; please ask for details.

Future opportunities

This course is a recognised route into a Level 2 course, employment or an Apprenticeship.
