Physics AS at Ysgol Y Strade

Course description

Students who follow the specification will be introduced to a wide range of Physics principles and be led to an understanding of how nature operates at both microscopic and macroscopic scales. They will understand how these principles are applied in tackling problems of human society.

Course content

PH1: Basic physics, kinematics, energy concepts, conduction of electricity, resistance. DC circuits.

PH2: Waves, refraction of light, photons, matter, forces and the universe, using radiation to study the stars.

PH3: Practical physics – based upon techniques developed in the AS course.

Entry requirements

Although each student will be considered on an individual basis for entry onto the course, it would be beneficial to have at least a C grade in Science and Additional Science (Higher tier).

Assessment

PH1: Written paper 1 ½ h

PH2: Written paper 1 ½ h

PH3: Externally set, internally assessed 1 ½ h practical test.
