English Edexcel AS and A Level at Sir John Leman High School

Course description

This course is for students who enjoy reading and writing non- fiction, although producing creative writing is also included. The course will allow students to hone their analytical and creative skills.

Extended Learning:

Tasks will include collecting language data, finding articles to annotate and practising exam style written responses.

Course content

AS Level:

Component 1: Context and Identity

  • In section one of the exam, students are presented with thematically linked unseen data, and write about how the contexts of the texts affect language use.
  • In section two, students write about two unseen 21st century texts.

Component 2: Child Language

  • Covers the same topics and content as the child language component in the A2 course.
  • The question paper requires students to respond to two sets of unseen data.

A Level:

Component 1: Language Variation

  • Students learn about how language varies depending on modes of communication, audiences and how language can be used to create personal identity.
  • Section one of the exam requires students to use linguistic knowledge to compare two unseen 21st century texts.
  • The second section requires a comparison of two thematically linked texts from different time periods.

Component 2: Child Language

  • Students find out how children acquire language skills in speech and writing from the ages of 0 to 8.
  • The exam requires students to write an extended response to unseen data.

Component 3: Investigating Language

  • Students investigate an area of language from a set list.
  • The first section of the exam requires a response to unseen data and the second requires students to connect data to their in-depth investigation.

Coursework: Crafting Language

  • Students pick a genre, and explore the ways in which language is used within that genre.
  • They then produce two pieces of original writing in their chosen genre.


Entry requirements

  • Ideally Grades 5 / 6 GCSE English Language/ English Literature.


A Level:

Component 1: Language Variation

  • 35% of A Level
  • Assessment is through a 2 hour 15 minute written examination.

Component 2: Child Language

  • 20% of A Level
  • This unit is assessed through a one hour examination.

Component 3: Investigating Language

  • 25% of A Level
  • Assessment is through a 1 hour 45 minute written examination.

Coursework: Crafting Language

  • 20% of A Level
  • Assessment is through two written assignments.

    • The Sixth Form is a lively and vibrant place, which offers students a large number of opportunities to contribute to the whole school through extra-curricular activities and leadership. These include recreational Sport, Creative Writing, Young Enterprise, the annual RAG Week and the Sixth Form Council.
