Public services BTEC Diploma / Extended Diploma - Level 3 at Dudley College

Course description

This course is aimed at people who wish to gain employment in the uniformed or wider non-uniformed public services ( Army, Navy, RAF, Police service, Fire Service ect). The Level 3 course wil prepare you for work or to help you progress on to a higher level of study.

Course content

You will study 180 credits  (over two years).  Mandatory units: • Government, policies and the public services • Leadership and teamwork in the public services • Citizenship, diversity and the public services • Understanding discipline in the uniformed public services • Fitness testing and training for the uniformed public services.  

You will also study a range of specialist units chosen from the following:  Specialist units: • Physical preparation, health and lifestyle for the public services • International institutions and human rights • Understand the impact of war, conflict and terrorism on public services • Outdoor and adventurous expeditions • Skills for land-based outdoor and adventurous activities • Skills for water-based outdoor and adventurous activities • Crime and its effects on society • Command and control in the uniformed public services • Responding to emergency service incidents • Planning and management of major incidents • Career planning for the public services • Police powers in the public services  s • Communication and technology in the uniformed public services • Custodial care services • Aspects of the legal system and law making process • Extended research in public services • Current and media affairs in public services  • Security procedures in the public services • Practical team sports

Entry requirements

For 16/17

You should have one of the following qualifications:  Diploma: • 4 GCSEs at grade C or above to include English and maths.  Extended Diploma: • 5 GCSEs at grade C or above to include English and maths.

For 17/18

You should have one of the following qualifications:: • 5 GCSEs at grade C or above to include English and maths ( Grade 4 or above if taken post 2016).  


You will be assessed by a variety of methods including written and practical work.  Participation in practical activities is essential.

Financial information

There is no need to worry about the costs of coming to college as there is lots of financial help available. Our finance and welfare officers will be able to talk to you about any help that may be available to you based on your individual circumstances.

Bursary fund


Students aged 16-18 attending a full-time further education course can apply to the 16-18 Bursary Fund for help with college related costs. More information about the 16-18 Bursary Fund can be found at the website: or by contacting our Student Finance team on 01384 363 555.




We will provide a free bus pass to help with travel costs for 16-18* year olds on full-time programmes, based on individual circumstances**. To qualify for a free bus pass***, you must live more than one mile from the campus at which you will be studying and not already be in receipt of other financial support, such as Care to Learn funding.


*Under 19 as at 31 August 2017.


**Students with learning difficulties or disabilities who are unable to access public transport may still be able to receive help – talk to our Student Finance team.


***Evidence of family income will need to be provided.

Future opportunities

Higher Education or employment in the Police, Fire or Military, Ambulance Service or Prison Service. There is potential for the qualification to prepare you for appropriate direct employment in the vocational sector and it is suitable for those who wish to enter a particular specialist area of work. It is broadly equivalent to three GCE A Levels.
