Biology AS Level at Monkseaton High School

Course description

The AS Course is designed to give an understanding of some of the fundamental ideas in Biology which underpin the make-up and functioning of living organisms.

  • Practical and experimental skills (to include 12 compulsory experiments in the full A Level)
  • Data handling, analysis and evaluation
  • Synoptic overview of the relevance of biology in society in the 21st century
  • Collaboration and communication via subject based problem solving
  • Independent study skills

Course content

Topic 1: Biological molecules and their universal nature

Topic 2: Cells as the building blocks of life

Topic 3: Exchange of substances between organisms and the environment

Topic 4: DNA, genetic information and variation

Entry requirements

5A*-C/9-5 GCSE grades. Students must also achieve at least B grades in Core Science and Additional Science or GCSE Biology, and at least a grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics.

Assessment

Paper 1 May/June: 50% of AS grade

Paper 2 May/June: 50%of AS grade

Practical skill development through 6 compulsory experiments
