Course description

Unit 2: Energy, Rate and the Chemistry of carbon compounds

  • Thermochemistry
  • Rates of reaction
  • The wider impact of Chemistry
  • Organic compounds
  • Hydrocarbons
  • Halogenoalkanes
  • Alcohols and carboxylic acids and instrumental analysis

Year 13

Unit 3: Physical and inorganic Chemistry

  • Redox
  • p-block Chemistry
  • d-block Chemistry
  • Kinetics
  • Enthalpy changes
  • Entropy
  • Equilibrium including acid and base reactions

Unit 4: Organic Chemistry

  • Stereoisomerism
  • Aromaticity
  • Alcohols and phenol
  • Carboxylic acids
  • Amines
  • Amino acids, peptides and proteins
  • Organic synthesis and analysis

Unit 5: Practical Unit

  • Practical work, which reinforces the theoretical work.

Assessment

Unit 1:

  • 20% of A Level
  • Written examination: 1hour 30 minutes

Unit 2:

  • 20% of A Level
  • Written examination: 1hour 30 minutes

Unit 3:

  • 25% of A Level
  • Written examination: 1 hour 45 minutes

Unit 4:

  • 25% of A Level
  • Written examination: 1 hour 45 minutes

Unit 5:

  • 10% of A Level
  • Practical examination: 3 hours
