Business Level 3 at Northampton College

Course description

The Level 3 Business courses cover a range of business subjects. The method of learning is a combination of tutor led sessions and directed student study.The 90 Credit Diploma is completed within 1 year, whereas the Extended Diploma is completed over 2 years. Both are Level 3 qualifications. Progression from the first year to the second year will be dependent on attaining grades above a pass in some units and an ability to study at the required level independently.The 90 Credit Diploma is made up of nine units and will earn between 60 and 210 UCAS points depending on the grade achieved.There are 4 core mandatory Business Units:- Unit 1 The Business Environment- Unit 2 Business Resources- Unit 3 Introduction to Marketing- Unit 4 Business Communication In addition to the above, students will study five additional units, which have typically covered the following in the first year of study:- Unit 5 Business Accounting- Unit 9 Exploring Creative Product Promotion- Unit 12 Internet Marketing in Business- Unit 13 Recruitment and Selection in Business - Unit 14 Aspects of Employment Law- Unit 15 Development Planning for a Career in Business- Unit 19 Developing Teams in Business- Unit 21 Aspects of Business and Contract LawThe Extended Diploma is made up of eighteen units and earns between 120 and 420 UCAS points depending on the overall grade achieved.Students will have an input into deciding which additional nine units will be studied in the second year.The following units have previously been studied in Year 2:- Unit 5 Business Accounting- Unit 10 Market Research in Business- Unit 16 Human Resource Management in Business - Unit 18 Managing a Business Event- Unit 24 Aspects of Criminal Law Relating to Business- Unit 28 Business Project Management- Unit 29 Understanding Retailing- Unit 36 Starting a Small Business- Unit 37 Understanding Business Ethics- Unit 38 Business and the Economic Environment- Unit 39 International Business

Course content

This course is aimed at those who wish to gain entry to higher education or for those wishing to gain an industry recognised qualification before going into full time employment. This mode of study will suit those individuals who enjoy coursework and project based work and can work well independently.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at Grade C or above including English and Mathematics or BTEC Level 2 Business at Merit plus GCSE English and Mathematics at Grade C or above.

Assessment

A process of continuous assessment involving unit assignments (normally three or four per unit). There are strict deadlines for the completion of these throughout the academic year. Assignments will be assessed in a variety of ways to include: presentations; role play; simulations; observations; time constrained (test) scenarios. There is a bias towards written essays, reports and magazine article style submissions.

Future opportunities

After successful achievement of this course you can enter employment as this qualification is recognised by employers in industry. Many students also apply for courses in Higher Education and certain universities are very keen to offer BTEC students a place on their degree courses with a Merit Grade or above.
