Legal Secretaries C&G CILEx Diploma Level 3 at Hugh Baird College

Course description

You will undertake fourteen internal assignments during this course, plus two external exams. One of the exams will be in proofreading which will require appropriate spelling, punctuation and grammar skills and you will also complete a multiple choice exam in legal studies, which will require knowledge of the English legal system.

The assessments will include keyboarding, speed and accuracy, presentation of legal documents, written communication, administration and research skills. The programme will also include maths and English to help you achieve you future career aspirations.

Course content

Business and the legal environment:

  • Organising an event
  • Health and safety
  • Methods of communication, including formal reports and telephone techniques
  • Improving working practices
  • Team work

Proof reading:

  • Proof reading exam

Advanced legal text processing:

  • Producing legal documents including statements and briefs
  • Audio typing
  • Proofreading

Legal Studies:

  • Principles of liability
  • Principles of criminal law
  • Multiple choice exam in the legal environment

Entry requirements

In order to qualify for this course you will need:

  • 4 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English & maths

or

  • Legal Secretaries – CILEx Diploma – Level 2 and be working towards Maths and English GCSE at grade C.
  • We also welcome applications from those with adequate relevant work experience
  • If you don’t have relevant qualifications you will need to complete a proofreading assessment at your interview

Entry to all courses are subject to a successful interview, a satisfactory reference from your school or employer and evidence that you will be a committed student.

Further information

If you are aged 16-19, this qualification will form a substantial part of your study programme. The study programme has been designed to ensure that young people are fully equipped and ready to move on to the world of work or higher level courses. In addition to your main qualification, will you also get the opportunity to undertake relevant and CV bolstering work experience out in your chosen industry. You will also be supported through maths and English qualifications.

      The Merseyrail Bootle Oriel Road station is only a two minute walk from the College campus. This station is on the Northern Line and offers easy access to the College from Liverpool, Crosby, Formby, Southport and other areas.

      The closest motorway junctions are the M58 1a/ M57 Junction 7 – 3.7 miles (6km). Then follow the A59 towards Liverpool for approximately ten minutes, turning right onto the A5058 at the first roundabout, which leads onto Balliol Road.
