BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Science at Abbey Grange Church of England Academy

Course description

The course is particularly suitable for people who have studied Applied Science GCSE or who have taken a BTEC in Science. This course is designed to enable a range of students to continue their study of Science beyond GCSE. It can be taken alongside other BTEC subjects or A-levels and is broadly the equivalent of one A-level. It suits students who have enjoyed studying Science at GCSE, but who do not meet the entry requirements for A-level and also those for whom terminal exams represent a big challenge.

Course content

The requirements of the qualification will mean students develop the transferable and higher-order skills that are highly regarded by both HE and employers. For example, when studying the science investigative unit, students will learn how to plan investigations, collect, analyse, and present data and communicate results, thus supporting some of the skills students need to progress into higher education, employment, self-employment or training. The course we will offer is the Extended Certificate. This consists of the following: • Principles and Applications of Science • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques • Science Investigation Skills • One Optional Unit chosen from a list (the option will be chosen by staff, not individuals!)

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades A*-C.

C in Science.

Assessment

Assessment is via a range of different methods, designed to suit a wide variety of learners. This includes internally set and marked assignments, exam board set and marked tasks and written exams.

Future opportunities

This qualification, when studied with other level 3 qualifications, is primarily designed to support progression to employment, after further study at university. However, it can also support students progressing to employment directly, or via an apprenticeship. It will give successful students the transferable knowledge, understanding and skills that will be an advantage when applying for a range of industry linked training programmes or apprenticeships in the applied science, or other sector of their choice. Examination board: Edexcel
