Course description

This subject requires an interest in, and knowledge of, sport as well as an enthusiasm for taking part in a variety of activities. Students need to show initiative and independence in preparing, carrying out and producing coursework elements.

Year One (AS) Unit 1: Opportunities for and the effects of leading a healthy and active lifestyle - deals with exercise physiology, skill acquisition and opportunities for participation. Unit 2: Analysis and evaluation of physical activity - requires students to show they can perform core skills of their chosen activities and offers the opportunity to coach and officiate as well as participate. Year Two (A2) Unit 3: Optimising performance and evaluating contemporary issues in sport – involves a more detailed study of how a knowledge of exercise physiology and psychology can affect performance and how contemporary influences impact on sports men and women. Unit 4: Optimising practical performance – requires candidates to demonstrate their ability to perform, analyse and evaluate in competition or performance and then to identify weaknesses and suggest appropriate strategies for improvement.
