Motor Vehicle Body Repair Level 1 Diploma at Platinum Training

Course description

The Motor Vehicle Body Repair Level 1 Diploma is ideal for both students who are starting out on their journey into the Motor Vehicle Industry and those who just want try out working with cars to see if they enjoy it. The course covers all aspects of repair to the external body of the car, from minor to major restoration as well as improvements (modifications) to the external look of a car.

Training takes place over 8 hours per week at the Motor Vehicle Training Garage working towards the Body Repair Diploma and 4 hours a week at Wilson Road working on Employability and Functional Skills.

Half of the time at the Garage is spent doing practical on live, working cars within the purpose built, state of the art training centre.

Assessment is carried out via e-portfolio.

Students will also complete a Work Placement as part of the course, allowing them to experience first hand what life is like working in a busy Motor Vehicle Garage.

Course content

The Body Repair qualification covers all aspects involved with the look of the car. Some of the areas covered include:

  • Health and Safety
  • Materials, Equipment, Tools and Structures
  • Low Carbon Technologies
  • Forming and Joining car parts
  • Component Fitting
  • Vehicle Construction
  • Basic Valeting
  • Vehicle Preparation and Refinishing (including Paint)
  • Removal and Fitting of Panels
  • Spot Welding
  • Removing and Fitting Mechanical Components
  • Body Panel Repair

All these areas are carried out with half the time spent on the theory and half spent doing practical on working cars within the garage.

Students also complete Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT at varying levels depending on previous qualification and ability level. Students can be expected to be challenged to achieve as high a qualification as they can.

The course also includes work preparation skills and a work experience placement to experience a work environment.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements on the course, just a good, positive attitude and willingness to learn.


Assessment on the Body Repair Level 1 Diploma is carried out via e-portfolio within the lesson time and through practical activity.

Assessment on Functional Skills qualifications is carried out via formal examination with learners pushed to achieve as high a level as they can to help with their progression onto further study or apprenticeships.


Financial information

Weekly travel payments are paid into student's bank accounts on a weekly basis to cover the cost of a weekly bus pass.

Further finiancial help and support is available and will be discussed on an individual basis dependant on individual student needs.

Students will also be provided with their own boots and overalls (PPE) once they have started on the course.

Future opportunities

After completing a Level 1 Diploma in Body Repair, students have a number of possible progression routes to continue on their journey to becoming a fully qualified mechanic:

  • Further college study

Students can apply to complete a Level 2 Body Repair Course at college and then move on to a Level 3 to become fully qualified

  • Apprenticeship

If you have an employer that is willing to take you on as an apprentice, then Platinum can deliver the training for you. Platinum also offer their own Body Repair Apprenticeship at Level 2. This allows students to continue to learn in a classroom environment once a week and learn through on the job training in a workplace whilst picking up a weekly wage.
