Course description

Product design is about the life cycle of products. They start as an idea in someones head and then they have to be developed by a team of experts in sales, design, ergonomics, materials technology and many more. Products are manufactured from raw materials and labour brought and sold in the global economy. They are distributed, used and disposed of, there are different kinds of choices at each stage of a products life: moral, aesthetic, environmental and economic. This course will provide you with the evaluative skills necessary to make informed choices in todays crowded global market place and the hands on practical pleasure of two design and make coursework projects. Coursework outcomes can include a range of materials (wood, metal, plastic card).

Product design encourages you to take a broad view of technology and design. It will develop your practical capacity and help you learn to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing. You can work in wood, metal, plastic, card or a mixture of materials. With an A level in product design you can choose from the many design based courses on offer, including product design, engineering, sports equipment design, transport design, furniture design, jewellery design, and teaching design and technology etc. Or you may wish to start a career in manufacturing.

  • Unit 2: Learning through designing and making
  • Unit 3: Design and manufacture
  • Unit 4: Design and making practice

Entry requirements

Students with a GCSE in resistant materials or product design, BTEC first certificate in engineering, or a city and guilds level 2 qualification would be ideally suited to study this course.

50% Written Examination

50% Coursework
