Performing Arts (Dance) BTEC Level 3 at Harlington Upper School

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Performing Arts course is aimed at those students who have a strong interest in dance choreography and performance in a variety of styles. Students will also study the theoretical aspect of successful practitioners work. Compulsory units focus on:

•Research, critical analysis and extended writing skills on the knowledge of influential practitioners to inform their own work and practice

• Development of the appropriate skills and techniques in various performance styles – performing live to an audience

• Students will develop the essential psychomotor and effective skills essential for group dance performances. This includes physical techniques and wider transferable skills such as: working collaboratively, personal management, confidence in stage performance, problem solving, teamwork and communication

Course content

Students are required to perform to an audience on a regular basis this enhances their confidence and expression in dance. Assessment is internal (50%) and external (50%) and students are required to perform in two showcase events with regular attendance to rehearsals during in and after school. Strengths in English would be an advantage, the theoretical aspect of this course includes independent completion of:

• Digital reviews

• Extended writing

• Reports

• Presentations

• External exam (5 hours)

• External exam (3 hours)

Employers and professional bodies were consulted to confirm that this course content is appropriate and consistent with current practice for students who may choose to enter employment within the Performing Arts industry.

Further information

Learning strategies:

Learners will participate in range of dance workshops, seminars and lectures. Students will take responsibility for their own learning and achievement and will be expected to be available for some time out of normal school hours. Furthermore, learners will be expected to have a positive attitude to dance as they may work with external agencies and students lower down the school. It is recommended that students taking this course have experience of dancing one or more styles.
