Course description

A Level Physics is crucial to understanding the world around us, the world inside us, and the world beyond us. It is the most basic and fundamental science. Physics challenges our imaginations with concepts like quantum and relativity, and it leads to great discoveries, like computers and lasers, that change our lives.

Course content


AS Physics Year includes:

  • Particles, quantum phenomena  and electricity
  • Mechanics, materials and  waves
  • Investigative and practical skills  in physics

A2 Physics Year includes:

  • Fields and further mechanics
  • Nuclear physics, thermal  physics and turning points
  • Investigative skills in physics

Entry requirements


Double Award Science* at higher tier (grade B or above) or GCSE Physics (grade B or above) and GCSE Biology or Chemistry (Grade B or above).

You should also achieve a grade B or above in GCSE Maths and English (higher tier).

This must be Core and Additional Science. Students who have taken Core and Applied Science will not be qualified to take this course and should consider one of the BTEC Applied Science courses instead.

Please note that all students taking AS Physics must also take AS Maths because of the mathematical demands of the course.

Future opportunities

Most students go on to higher education in areas such as Physics, Engineering, Medicine and Veterinary Science. The skills learned in Physics are also sought after in many other numerate disciplines such as finance.
