ICT Applied AS A2 at Prince William School

Course content

Exam Board and Syllabus:This General Certificates of Education is part of the level 3 provision of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). We will follow the Edexcel GCE in Applied ICT. AIMS OF THE COURSEThe GCE in Applied ICT aims to produce effective, discerning ICT users who:·        can select and use appropriate ICT tools and techniques to help them carry out investigations, capture and handle data, solve problems, make decisions, and present and communicate information·        are aware of the benefits and drawbacks of ICT and its impact on the way in which people live their lives·        can plan and manage projects and work effectively with others.  COURSE STRUCTUREThe qualification has an AS/A2 structure. It can take the form of:·        a Single Award AS GCE (3 units)·        a Single Award Advanced GCE (6 units) We will offer the Single Award AS GCE in Year 12, allowing those students who are successful to move onto the Single Award Advanced GCE in Year 13. In Year 12 we will complete three units of work:Unit  Titlenit The Knowledge Worker (practical assessment)1           The Information Age2          The Digital Economy3          The Knowledge Worker In Year 13 we will complete the following units:                plus one unit from this list:Unit  Titlenit                                                                   Unit         Title7          Using Database Software                                              10             Using Multimedia Software8            Managing ICT Projects                                               11            Using Spreadsheet Software                                                                                                12             Customising Applications

Entry requirements

Students who would benefit most from a GCE in Applied ICT are likely to have one or more of the following Level 2 qualifications:·        GCSE in Applied ICT (Double Award) at grades A*A*–CC·        Intermediate GNVQ in ICT·        BTEC First for IT Practitioners.


Units 3 and 7 are externally marked assessments. All other units are assessed by means of the Internal Assessment of an e-portfolio. Full details of this course can be obtained from the Edexcel Website:

Future opportunities

PROGRESSIONThe GCE in Applied ICT qualifies for UCAS points. It gives students a wide choice of progression options into further study, training, or relevant employment. Students who successfully complete the qualification will be well equipped to move onto degrees and BTEC Higher National Diplomas in related subjects such as ICT, Computer Science, Information Systems, Multimedia, Software Engineering, Computer Networking, e-Business and Information Management.
