Design & Technology: 3D Design & Graphical Communication A Level at Riddlesdown Collegiate

Course description

This Design and Technology course has been designed to provide engaging and innovative creative learning experiences, where art, craft and design practice is meaningfully integrated with theoretical knowledge and understanding. Students can continue with their previous specialism from GCSE or combine other focus materials. Students are encouraged to create, investigate, analyse, experiment, and design & make as a means of developing technical and expressive skills.

Course content

Year 12 The Personal Investigation component consists of a major, in-depth, practical, critical and theoretical investigative project/theme-based portfolio and outcome/s with integrated extended written critical and contextual analysis Assignments, briefs or themes undertaken are to be determined by the student and teacher. This is a coursework component.

Year 13 A continuation of the personal investigation will commence in the first term. The second term will focus on the Externally Set Assignment. Students are required to develop independently a personal response to one of a varied range of stimuli within specified time constraints. Students are required to bring together the best of their understanding, knowledge and skills built up over their course of study and demonstrate or apply this through this externally set assignment.

Specific Requirements and Skills Required:

Ability to develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

Ability to explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops. 

Ability to record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress. 

Ability to present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

Future opportunities

The most common progression from Design Technology is on to courses in Product Design, Engineering and Manufacture, Construction, Advertising, Graphic Design, Architecture and all other Design related careers. In addition, Design Technology has strong links with other Science, Engineering and Mathematics based careers.
