Aims of the course
This course is designed to encourage candidates to:
Develop an interest in, and an enthusiasm for language learning
Develop understanding of the language in a variety of contexts and genres
Communicate confidently, clearly and effectively in the language for a range of purposes
Develop awareness and understanding of the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of countries or communities where the language is spoken.
Consider their study of the language in a broader context
Derive enjoyment and benefit from language learning
Acquire knowledge, skills and understanding for practical use, further study and/or employment
Communicate with speakers of the language and take their place in a multilingual global society
Programme of Study
Throughout the course students will be given the opportunity to build on and expand their knowledge of French grammar. In addition, at A2 as part of the stretch and challenge element, students will have the opportunity to explore the skill of translation. A2 students will study a cultural topic in detail, which can include a literary text and this is excellent preparation for Higher Education courses involving languages.
At AS, candidates develop an understanding of topics including Media, Popular Culture, Healthy Living and Family and are able to express opinions in both writing and speaking.
Unit 1: Listening, Reading and Writing examination 70%
Unit 2: Speaking examination – discussion of stimulus card and conversation of 3 topics, 1 selected by candidate. 30%
At A2, candidates build on the language skills they have acquired at AS through the topics of Environment, Multi-cultural Society and Contemporary Social Issues. They also study in depth two cultural topics from a choice of a period of 20
th Century History, a French speaking region, a novelist/ dramatist/ poet or a director/ architect/ musician/ painter.
Unit 3: Listening, Reading and Writing examination 35%
Unit 4: Speaking examination – discussion of stimulus card and conversation on the two cultural topics studied. 15%
Who is the course aimed at?
Studying French at A Level is for students who are interested in studying aspects of French contemporary society, good at critical thinking, analysis, evaluating and presenting your points of view, and keen to speak and write in French with a high degree of fluency and accuracy. They should also be prepared to spend a lot of time on learning vocabulary and reading around subjects and prepared to go abroad and speak the language.
