Foundation Learning Pathways (Business Administration, IT Users and Creative Media) Entry Level 3 at Croydon College

Course description

This course is for you if you have not achieved at GCSE level and wish to work towards gaining a vocational qualification and improve your literacy, numeracy, IT and employability skills.

You will have the chance to try out pathways in Business Administration, IT Users and Creative Media as one vocational taster per term.

Business Administration

In this course you will develop your knowledge of the different types of office equipment that are available and how to use this equipment to carry out administrative tasks safely and efficiently. The types of equipment used will reflect a typical modern workplace and are likely to include the telephone, fax machine, franking machine, photocopier and scanner. You will also learn how to use the basic functions of a computer and to understand its operating system in an administrative context. You will develop an understanding of the IT desktop environment and have the opportunity to create and save simple business documents and to create and send business emails.

IT Users

In this course you will use software applications to produce presentations which include a combination of media (for example images, animation and sound). You will gain knowledge about what kinds of information can be used within a presentation and the how copyright laws affect their presentations. You will also learn to create spreadsheets displaying charts and graphs and use a range of basic word processing tools and techniques to produce various types of documents.

Creative Media

In this course you will learn about the use of different types of mediums and will work as a team to plan, record and present a simple media product and evaluate your own work.

You will have the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills needed to produce digital images. You will use a variety of hardware to capture images and also create and edit images digitally.

You will learn by applying your skills by working in small groups, making presentations, completing written assignments and practical tasks.

You will have a personal tutor who will help you be successful and make sure you are prepared for your next steps in learning.

You will also improve the skills you need to either get a job or improve the skills you already have such as working in a team, communication skills and researching different careers. 

Good English and maths skills are essential for success in studying and for future employment prospects and so Croydon College ensures that these skills are developed in all learning opportunities.

Course content

Students have previously taken part in an activity day for a local nursery as part of the public services award, visited a car production line as part of their motor vehicle qualification and organised a trip to London Zoo and the Science Museum as part of their travel and tourism qualification.

You will have the opportunity to attend different events at the college which are attended by employers so you can find out about different career choices and participate in mock interviews. 

You will also have the opportunity to take part in sports activities such as football, take part in competitions, meet learners from different cultures and take part in community activities.

You will have access to state-of-the art facilities and to staff who are experienced in delivering these subjects. You will also have access to an outstanding learning resource centre which includes PCs so you can study independently.

Entry requirements

Evidence of a commitment to learn shown at interview.

English assessed at Entry Level 2 or above.

Assessment

The vocational subjects are assessed by assignment and practical based assessments. You will also take functional skills exams in English, maths and ICT.

Future opportunities

After successfully completing this course you can progress onto Level 1 courses and/or Apprenticeships.

Former students have progressed onto university and careers in the retail, construction and child care sectors.
