History at Blackfen School for Girls

Course description

This subject is for you if you’re interested in the development of human society, culture and beliefs. It attracts those people who have a natural curiosity about life and are not afraid of complex ideas and reading and writing. History is difficult. History places particular stress on the development of independent thought and analytical skills, and requires excellent communication skills, namely high levels of literacy and oral presentation. Consequently, students following History courses will be expected to do a great deal of independent work. Students are offered the opportunity to learn about unfamiliar periods of time which will make reflective and adaptable skills, empathy and imaginative insight. 


Course content

Revolutions in Early Modern and Modern Europe – (Proposed Study Route). 

Paper 1: Breadth study with interpretations Paper : 1C: Britain, 1625–1701: conflict, revolution and settlement.   Paper 2: Depth study: 2C.1: France in revolution, 1774–99 or 2C.2: Russia in revolution, 1894–1924 or Paper 3: Themes in breadth with aspects in depth: 31: Rebellion and disorder under the Tudors, 1485–1603 or 37.2: Germany, 1871–1990: united, divided and reunited.

Paper 4: Coursework

Civil rights and race relations in the USA, 1850–2009



Entry requirements

Grade B in GCSE History and English Language.


There are three exams at the end of Year 13 and Coursework due in May 2017.

Paper 1: Breadth study with interpretations. Exam 2 hours and 15 minutes 30% of the overall grade.   Paper 2: Depth study. Exam 1 hour and 30 minutes 20% of the overall grade.   Paper 3: Themes in breadth with aspects in depth. Exam 2 hours and 15 minutes  30% of the overall grade.   Coursework Unit The ability to carry out a historical enquiry, analysing and evaluating historical interpretations, and organising and communicating the findings (AO1/AO3).


Future opportunities

History can open up many career paths including, law, journalism, management, marketing, teaching, police work, media careers. Many of the leading politicians including past Prime Ministers have studied History at University. History is one of the most respected degrees at University.


Further information

This subject is offered as a two year Linear A level course. Students will sit final exams at the end of 2 years. Students opting for this subject will be entered for an AS qualification at the end of the first year. This is a standalone qualification.
