Course description

Why should I choose English Literature?

This course is for students who love reading, who wish to improve their writing ability and who simply love discussing great ideas!

Course content

In the first year you will study a range of modern texts and forms; from plays to poetry, novels to creative writing. In the second year you will study a fewer number of texts (e.g. ‘Hamlet’) but focus on each in more detail.

You will also complete a comparative study on ‘Wuthering Heights’, ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ and Carol Ann Duffy; selecting your own coursework question and completing your own independent research.

In total you will have two texts to study for the exam in year 12: ‘Broken Glass’ by Arthur Miller (play) and a comparative study of Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes (poetry). You will also study a range of novels from two literary time periods (Romanticism e.g. ‘Frankenstein’ and Modernism e.g. ‘The Catcher in the Rye’) and complete two pieces of coursework on a focus of your own choosing.
