Beauty Therapy Level 2 at Kendal College

Course description

This course will give you the qualifications and experience necessary to enter the field of beauty therapy and go on to work in beauty salons, spas, as a sales representative, on cruise ships, in health centres, or even start your own business.

You will work alongside enthusiastic and experienced staff and use up-to-date facilities and equipment. The department runs a variety of trips throughout the year, for example, an overseas spa trip. Students also have the opportunity to complete in WorldSkills competitions.

This course will develop your customer care, retailing and team working skills. You will learn how to handle money, multi-task and use your own initiative.

This course usually takes place over 3 days.

All of our learners will be given support with their English and Maths skills where relevant to their main programme. Those students who have not yet achieved a ā€˜Cā€™ grade at GCSE in these subjects will continue to work towards these important qualifications at a level suited to them.

This course will be part of a wider study programme, which may also include english & maths, work placement and additional studies.

Course content

This course has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills in; 

- How to provide eyelash and brow treatments 
- Remove hair using waxing techniques
- Applying make-up 
- Manicure and pedicure                                                                   - Facials and skin care

You will also develop a sound knowledge of health and safety practice in a salon environment, how to contribute to the effective running of a beauty business, how to carry out effective salon reception duties and how to display retail stock to promote sales in the salon. You will also develop a knowledge and understanding of the practical skills learned throughout this qualification. 

The purpose of this qualification is to develop your skills in beauty therapy to a high level of occupational ability, to enable you to perform your own salon services.

You will learn in a variety of situations including, theory classes, practical workshops and public salons, which are well equipped to prepare you for industry. 

This range of experience is designed to help you gain confidence, independence and professional awareness.

Entry requirements

Although there are no fixed entry requirements you will be asked to demonstrate your awareness of the subjects, and show a keen interest and motivation.

To study at this level, you should ideally have four GCSEs at grade A*-D, including English. 

Mature students may be accepted on to the course without formal qualifications. 

You will be required to purchase a salon uniform (approx. 50 pounds) and a kit (approx. 150 pounds) and text book for your personal use within classes. If the cost of these items would be a challenge and you live in a low income household/ or are in financial hardship, please ask Student Services about the financial support available.

Assessment will be via a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments. As part of this qualification you are required to produce a portfolio of evidence. A portfolio will confirm the knowledge, understanding and skills that you have learnt. It may be in electronic or paper format. 

Evidence in the portfolio may take the following forms:  
- Observed work 
- Witness statements 
- Audio-visual media 
- Evidence of prior learning or attainment 
- Written questions 
- Oral questions 
- Assignments 
- Case studies

Future opportunities

When you have successfully completed this qualification will have the opportunity to progress to the following VTCT qualifications:

- Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy General
- Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy Massage

You will gain the qualifications and experience necessary to enter the field of Beauty Therapy either locally or further afield. 

You could work within the industry in a number of areas, such as: 
- Beauty salons 
- Health farms 
- Sales representatives 
- Cruise ships 
- Health centres 
- Self employed

Progression opportunities to Higher Education include Foundation Degree or Management roles.

We have a good relationship with many local salons - they contact us when looking for staff and carry out recruitment days in the college.

    • The majority of our courses are based at our main site. The College completed a £12.9 million new build project in 2008, which includes reception, conference and seminar suites, hairdressing salons and 250-seat cafe with external balcony. The site also features the stunning Construction and Heritage Centre, which features cutting edge facilities for carpentry and joinery, brickwork, plumbing and electrical installation.

      In October 2010 the College opened the South Lakeland Design Engineering Centre, which has brought engineering back to Kendal College. The Centre, designed in conjunction with local engineering firms including Gilbert Gilkes & Gordon Limited, features state of the art computer numerical control (CNC) machinery, including a 3D printer, which prints out solid models directly from CAD Drawings. The college is currently building a new, purpose-built engineering centre which will open in September 2014 and provide new courses in medical science, engineering and sustainable energy.
