Business: BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate at The Howard School

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Business extends the specialist work-related focus in the business world and helps to develop a student’s knowledge into the working world. Pupils will focus on marketing and recruitment along with looking at how various businesses operate. This course is delivered over 360 Guided Learning Hours. The size of each unit will vary depending on allocated GLH. This course will be assessed both internally through assignments and externally through examinations or set time bound tasks.

Applications made to The Howard School can be made by both male and female students.

Course content

Business Studies is a very wide and complex subject which allows for the appreciation of various contemporary business scenarios. Pupils will be expected complete at least three hours independent learning each week to ensure all deadlines are adhered to.

We recommend all prospective pupils start to familiarise themselves with development in business through wider reading. We have found those pupils who immerse themselves in business literature often find it easier to apply business theory to real business examples which helps pupils to achieve highly.

Entry requirements

A minimum of Grade 5 in English and Maths. In addition, pupils must have BTEC Level 2 Business achieving at least Level 2 Merit.


The course is split as follows:

1. Exploring Business

2. Developing a Marketing Campaign ( Assessed Externally)

3. Personal & Business Finance (Assessed Externally)

4. Recruitment & Selection Process (subject to change)


Marks are awarded based on the work submitted and pupils can achieve a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*. (Equivalent of one A-Level).

Future opportunities

BTEC level 3 Business allows pupils to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in a real-life scenario they are likely to encounter in the workplace. Through work-based challenges, pupils are faced with realistic work conditions and time-based pressures. This consistent standard of BTEC assessment enables employers and higher education to trust all BTEC Level 3 pupils are equipped with a consistent base of business knowledge and skills.
