Agriculture C&G Diploma Level 3 at Kingston Maurward College

Course description

This Level 3 qualification is suitable for both school leavers or mature students looking for a career in modern agriculture. This is also the first year of the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture.

The course provides a thorough grounding in the agricultural industry and the qualification is highly respected within the farming community.

It enables students to understand technical and management aspects of animal, machine and crop production and to carry out a wide range of practical tasks on the farm. Varied subjects include ploughing, crop production, beef, sheep and dairy production, milking, estate skills, workshop practice, machinery and work related experience.

Successfully completing the Level 3 Diploma will allow you to fast track directly into the second year of the Level 3 Extended Diploma and complete a higher qualification.

This course has an outstanding record for successful students entering the agriculture industry and employment prospects for qualified and experienced young people with the right attitude are excellent as there is currently a skills shortage.

Course content

Units include:

  • Dairy, Beef, Sheep,
  • Crops and Forage Crops,
  • Workshop Practice and Estate Maintenance
  • Plant & Soil Science
  • Animal Health
  • Work Related Experience and Investigative Project

Additional qualifications include C&G (NPTC) Tractor Driving and Related Operations, C&G Level 2 Award in Safe Working in Agriculture, First Aid, Manual Handling and a two day shearing course. In most cases only assessment fees need to be paid by students wishing to achieve these additional qualifications.

Students will also be given the opportunity to develop their practical skills on the College farm, which will include occasional weekend and early morning duties.

The course is specially designed to produce students that are able to operate machinery and look after livestock to a high standard. It also provides the technical and management knowledge required for a supervisory or management post in farming or an allied industry.

Entry requirements

4 GSCEs at grade C or above, including English, Maths and Science, OR a relevant Level 2 Diploma at Distinction level, or a Level 2 Diploma in Work-based Agriculture with good levels of Maths and English. Mature students lacking formal qualifications will also be considered. Enthusiasm, relevant practical experience and the ability to cope with written work is required. Tetanus protection is highly recommended.

Financial information

Courses leading to a qualification are FREE for British citizens, aged under 19 years on 31 August in the academic year you start your course.* However, there may be some additional costs for clothing/kit and trips depending on your course.  You can apply to the Bursary Fund for extra help towards the cost of transport, food, equipment or childcare.

Materials required:

- Basic Stationery - Pens, paper, calculator and lever arch files - Suitable Outdoor Clothing - Practical clothing is necessary at all times. The clothing must be suitable for environment, weather and time of year. Polo shirts and sweatshirts can be purchased at the College. - Protective Overalls - All protective equipment will be inspected by the Course Manager. - Steel Toe Capped Safety Boots - All protective equipment will be inspected by the Course Manager - Steel Toe Capped Wellington Boots for livestock practical's.
