Sport: Dev, Coaching and Fitness BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma at Portsmouth College

Course description

This qualification offers a broad approach to the development of your skills and learning in sport.  In addition to the practical and theoretical aspects, you can choose to focus your work in coaching, fitness, officiating and/or sports participation.  The course is particularly good preparation for work in teaching*, sports/leisure centres, coaching, health promotion and community & sports development roles.

Course content

The BTEC Level 3 provides a fantastic work-related approach to learning.  You will complete projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations.  Units to be covered include:

  • Principles of anatomy and physiology in sport
  • The physiology of fitness
  • Assessing risk in sport
  • Fitness testing for sport and exercise
  • Practical team sport
  • Sports coaching
  • Fitness training and programming

…and others to be selected from a list of options including

  • Current issues in sport
  • Exercise, health and lifestyle
  • Psychology for sports performance

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grades A*-C, one of which would normally be English Language. If you wish to include a Level 2 BTEC or OCR National qualification as part of this entry requirement you will need to have achieved a Merit grade or higher.

Assessment

Through different forms of continuous assessment, including written portfolios, role plays, observations and presentations.  We use the online platform ‘Sports Brain’, which allows you to learn, submit work and track your progress wherever you have an internet connection.

Further information

You will visit the sports science laboratories at a local university and participate in outdoor pursuits on a residential visit.  Work experience is undertaken in the second year of the course. You are also encouraged to participate in the College’s Sports Academy teams.
