Modern Foreign Languages at Bourne Grammar School

Course description

We offer AS and A2 courses in French, German, Italian and Spanish.

Each course will greatly improve the understanding of the grammar of the language, and enrich the vocabulary through discussions on a whole range of contemporary topics, from personal and social to political and moral issues.

As with the GCSE qualification, students will progress equally in the four skills of
Listening, Speaking, reading and Writing. Many candidates continue their linguistic
studies at university and there is a great demand for graduates that can offer modern foreign languages, as more and more employers recognise the need to be able to communicate directly with their counterparts in Europe.

In addition, the removal of the obligation to study a foreign language as part of the national curriculum means that students of foreign languages are at a premium.
A successful student will have a genuine enthusiasm for languages and a desire
to find out more about the history and culture of our neighbours in europe, an ability also to work independently and to benefit from ready access to the internet, current magazines and newspapers, videos and an assistant from each country, all of which provide unrivalled opportunities to practise further language skills outside the classroom.

Entry requirements

Grade Bor above in the chosen Language.

Ab initio Italian - Italian is begun from scratch in the Sixth Form to AS Level at the end of Year 12 and A2 Level at the end of Year 13. Due to the intensive nature of study a high level of proficiency must be demonstrated in another MFL - grade A/A* equivalent
