ICT BTEC level 3 Diploma at Portsmouth College

Course description

You will gain a broad understanding of ICT used in business and in everyday life.  You will develop knowledge and skills in a wide range of software and hardware applications, including on-line apps and how to upgrade software and hardware to improve computer performance.  This course is an exciting opportunity to learn about real-world developments in information and communication technology and to conduct investigations using work-related contexts.

Course content

The BTEC course offers a huge range of potential units of study.  Some units are compulsory but many others are chosen by students and staff as specialist areas of study.


  1. Communication and Employability
  2. Computer Systems

The Diploma has an additional compulsory unit;

  1. Information Systems

Some of the specialist/optional units available include;

  • Digital Graphics
  • Database Design
  • E-Commerce
  • Website Production
  • Impact of the Use of ICT on a Business
  • Organisational Security
  • Installing and Upgrading Software
  • Maintaining a Computer System   

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grades A*-C, one of which would normally be English Language. If you wish to include a Level 2 BTEC or OCR National qualification as part of this entry requirement you will need to have achieved a Merit grade or higher.


Through continuous assessment of coursework, including practical activities.  There are no external examinations.

Further information

You will have the opportunity to join local trips to observe ICT operations in a business environment.  There will also be visits to Portsmouth and Southampton Solent universities to explore progression opportunities in ICT.
