Hairdressing Level 2 Diploma at Southport College

Course description

The course is an excellent grounding for all students looking to develop the basic skills of hairdressing. It is varied and flexible, leading to National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 2 in Hairdressing.

Course content

The course covers both practical training and assessment alongside the underpinning theory. A wide range of hairdressing subjects are covered, with additional input by commercial companies and specialist tutors to enhance student knowledge. All students are encouraged to participate in the college hairdressing competitions and shows with opportunities to compete in external projects. You will study: Hair and Scalp Conditions Shampooing/Conditioning Basic Cutting Techniques Blow Drying, Setting and Dressing Hair and Long Hair Work. Permanent Waving (additional unit) Colouring Selling techniques Teamwork How to give clients a good impression of yourself and your organisation Health and Safety

Entry requirements

3 GCSEs at grade D or Level 1 Diploma in related subject
Students should be well motivated, of good personal appearance and hygiene, enjoy working as part of a team and have the ability to follow instructions and work independently.

For students who have not yet achieved a grade C in Maths or English it is compulsory to study either Functional Skills or GCSE in each relevant subject. Attendance at these sessions are a vital part of your course to enhance your employability skills and prospects.


There is continuous assessment of practical work. The theory element of the course is by written portfolio. Evidence must be gathered during the year to satisfy both tutor and external moderator.

Future opportunities

General salon stylist, specialist (perming or colouring), technical representative, demonstrator for fashion houses, teaching in salons, staff trainer, self-employment. NVQ Level 3 Hairdressing course is available on successful completion of Level 2.
