Art & Design: Photography A2 at Charles Darwin School

Course description

Why study Photography? Just count how many photographic images you see in just one day.... The ideas behind this very practical course is to not just achieve excellent AS and AL grades, but also to broaden your visual skills, to enable you to read into a photograph's deeper meaning and to develop your latent photographic talent! You will explore and develop a wide range of photographic skills and ideas through exciting open ended projects, such as “I am a Wasp!” These are designed to introduce you to the demanding concepts of developing ideas, experimenting, recording and critical thinking. You will also learn a lot about the ideas behind Digital Photography and about such programs like Adobe Photoshop. All work is recorded in sketchbooks, and each project finishes with a formal presentation image. It is assessed regularly by your course tutors. The assessment criteria are Developing Ideas, Experimenting, Recording and Presenting. You will get regular and clear targets for improving the standard of your work. Every week you will take part in a “crit”, when you will be expected to present your work publicly to your fellow students and tutors. This helps you to gain confidence in your own skills and the importance of meeting dead-lines! Finally this is a branch of the OCR Art and Design AS and AL courses. There is no written exam. However there are two modules each year which you will work towards, a portfolio style unit and a practical examination.
