Further Mathematics A Level at Collingwood College

Course description

The study of Further Mathematics at AS/A level will require you to study some compulsory units, together with other optional units, which can be chosen to suit your particular requirements.

Further Pure units cover: Series, Complex Numbers, Numerical Solution of Equations, Coordinate Systems, Matrix Algebra, Proof, Inequalities, First Order Differential Equations, Second Order Differential Equations, Further Complex Numbers, Maclaurin and Taylor Series, Further Matrix Algebra, Vectors, Hyperbolic Functions, Differentiation, Integration, Further Coordinate Systems.

Mechanics units cover: Further Kinematics, Elastic Strings and Springs, Further Dynamics, Motion in a Circle, Statics of Rigid Bodies, Relative Motion, Elastic Collisions in 2 Dimensions, Further Motion of Particles in 1 Dimension, Stability, Applications of Vectors in Mechanics, Variable Mass, Moments of Inertia, Rotation of a Rigid Body About a Smooth Fixed Axis.

Statistics units cover: The Binomial and Poisson Distributions, Continuous Random Variables, Continuous Distributions, Samples, Hypothesis Tests.

Course content

The A level specification has 3 units:

Unit 4: Mechanics 3 (M3) or Statistics 2 (S2)
Unit 5: Further Pure 2 (FP2)
Unit 6: Further Pure 3 (FP3)

Entry requirements

Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade A*-C (or equivalent) including Grade A in Mathematics.


All units: written examinations at the end of each year.
All exams are 1 hour 30 minutes long.
All units have equal weighting.
