Further Mathematics A Level at Southend High School for Girls

Course description

What will you learn at AS?
In the Further Pure 1 module you will learn about
mathematical proof, matrices, complex numbers and first
order differential equations. The Statistics 2 module looks at
modelling real life situations using the normal distribution
and introduces the important concept of hypothesis testing
which is key to statistical analysis in any field. The Decision
1 module teaches you how to use algorithms and linear
programming in analysing real world problems and examine
networks and use graph theory.
Decision Maths 1, Further Pure 1 and Statistics 2.
Each paper carries equal weighting and there is no
coursework component.
What will you learn at A2?
In the Pure modules, you will get a chance to draw polar
curves, learn about hyperbolic functions and study group
theory. Your calculus skills will be developed further,
including differential equations and you will also revisit
topics such as numerical methods and complex numbers
in greater detail. You will develop the skills from Mechanics
1 in the Mechanics module 2 to now look at work, energy,
power, motion of projectiles, motion in a circle, collisions,
and states of equilibrium.
Further Pure 2, Further Pure 3 and Mechanics 2.
Each paper carries equal weighting and there is no
coursework component.

Entry requirements

Grade A or higher in GCSE Mathematics

Future opportunities

If you are thinking about studying Mathematics, Engineering
or Physics at university, you are advised to take Further
Mathematics at A level. It will assist your study in any of
the science subjects and is essential if you are considering
a career in Physics or Engineering. Some universities give
lower offers for Mathematics based degrees if Further
Mathematics is included. Please note: all Further
Mathematics modules are taken in Year 13. In Year 12,
Further Mathematics students take the A2 Mathematics
modules C1, C2, C3, C4, M1 and S1.
