Biology A Level at Mount Grace School

Course description

Students studying other science A Levels or those who wish to study science to a higher level will benefit greatly from studying this subject. The new A Level specification will help nurture a passion for Biology and lay the foundation for further study and careers in biological sciences and medicine. AS is now a stand-alone qualification, but will follow the same programme of study as the first year of A Level Biology

Course content

Topics studied are – AS and first year of A Level:

1. Biological molecules

2. Cells

3. Organisms exchange substances with their environment

4. Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms

Second year of A Level:

5. Energy transfers in and between organisms

6. Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments

7. Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems

8. The control of gene expression

Entry requirements

Candidates who wish to study Biology need to achieve two B Grades in science, either core and additional or two B grades from triple science and a B grade in Maths and English.


Written exams including questions on relevant practical skills.

AS Biology

Paper 1: Any content from topics 1-4 1 hour 30 minutes written paper - 50% of AS

Paper 2: Any content from topics 1-4 1 hour 30 minutes written paper - 50% of AS

A Level Biology

Paper 1: Any content from topics 1-4 2 hour written paper - 35% of A Level

Paper 2: Any content from topics 5-8 2 hour written paper - 35% of A Level

Paper 3: Any content from topics 1-8 2 hour written paper - 30% of A Level

Future opportunities

A Level Biology is a natural stepping stone for the study of medicine or veterinary sciences, and would be required for study of any of the biological sciences such as Marine Biology or Zoology. A Level Biology would be useful for Science teachers and anyone interested in a scientific careers ie, Medical and Law. Employment can be in a wide variety of fields and industries, from pharmaceutical research to water treatment and environmental monitoring.
