Maths (Pure and Statistics) AS and A Level at Portsmouth College

Course description

Mathematics is one of the most highly respected and valuable of AS/A levels.  It combines well with virtually all other subjects and is increasingly considered to be essential for students who are also taking one or more of the sciences at A level.  This course is most suitable for students with an A or A* grade at GCSE, but those with a good B will also be considered.

Course content

You will study modules which cover broad areas of Pure Mathematics and also explore Mechanics and Statistics in some depth.  You will find that your algebraic skills develop rapidly and structured revision helps you to achieve your full potential.

Entry requirements

You would normally be expected to have at least five GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English Language), some at grade B or above. Level 2 BTEC or OCR National qualifications (at Merit grade or higher) would be a useful addition but cannot be used instead of the basic GCSE requirement.

This course is assessed through examinations, there is no coursework.

Future opportunities

The Mathematics Department is always keen to engage in local and national competitions for mathematics students.  We also link up with local universities to explore progression opportunities in mathematics and other degrees with a significant mathematics content.
