Computer Technology Level 1 Certificate at Gateshead College

Course description

This new and exciting full time course is designed for you if you are interested in the Information Technology sector as a career choice, but as yet are uncertain about which pathway to follow.

From personal computers to smart phones, computing devices are an essential feature of the modern world. Technology may be changing every day, but the knowledge and understanding of how to use computers effectively is the same regardless of the technology being used.


Course content

Unit 01 Digital literacy

In this unit you will learn how digital and computing technology is used by society, how to interact safely with technology and how to locate information using a range of technologies.

Unit 02 Digital technology

In this unit you will learn how hardware and software operates, understand how a network operates and be able to use software for a range of purposes

Unit 03 Introduction to computer programming

In this unit you will learn how to use algorithms to solve programming problems and be able to code solutions using a programming language

Entry requirements

  • No qualifications required
  • We welcome applicants without prior experience.

Future opportunities

You will be able to progress onto Level 2 programmes when you complete the course, and develop a wide range of skills suitable for working in any area of the IT industry.

Fast-track to an apprenticeship

If you can’t find the right apprenticeship vacancy or you want to do some studying first - no problem. You can start on a vocational study programme then once you’re ready and a vacancy becomes available, we’ll help you transfer on to an apprenticeship.

    • Gateshead College's Baltic Campus is located on the Gateshead quayside, just minutes from Newcastle City Centre and its attractions.

      The College is situated behind the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and The Sage Gateshead.

      The College has its own car park, but at busy times alternative parking is available nearby.

      There is a charge for parking. Students can apply for a permit to allow free parking during study time.
