Course description

To study the Extended Diploma, you must have successfully completed the 90 Credit Diploma.

The dance courses offer wide ranging training and opportunities within many dance styles including classical ballet, contemporary, jazz, tap and social and cultural dance styles. Alongside this technical training students develop their creative skills through choreography classes and workshops.

Such training is then further supported by classes in dance history and Business in the Performing Arts Industry to widen your knowledge of all the job possibilities in Dance and the Arts.

The fully equipped dance studios are always bustling with students in classes, rehearsals and performances. The department has strong links with the local and wider community where students regularly perform, teach and choreograph, gaining skills that will enhance their learning and instil the qualities required to succeed in the dance world.

Performances, professional visits, theatre trips and workshops are fully integrated into all dance courses.

Course content

Dance is an intensive and exciting two year course, delivered by highly qualified teaching staff who cover different aspects of the Performing arts programme specialising in either Dance, Musical Theatre or Acting.

Throughout their course of study, students will take part in lots of exciting performances, including major productions, touring performances and a range of internal smaller performances and workshops.  Students will also have the opportunity to participate in residential trips both in the UK and abroad.  Previous residential trips include Broadway Dance New York and Scarborough National Student Drama festival.

There are three fully equipped dance studios at Guildford College, one that is multi-functional for Musical Theatre. We also have a fully equipped studio theatre.  All have hi-fi facilities with ipod connectivity, TV and video players and mirrors. Some of these studios can also be used as small performance venues.  All studios have DVD/projection and interactive laptop setup.  Large-scale performances take place in Local Theatres linked with Guildford College, such as The Mill, Glive, and Electric Theatre.

Performances are a fully integrated part of the Performing Arts department’s work. Students will take part in performing themselves and they are expected to visit the theatre regularly to see the work of professional acting, dance and musical theatre companies.

In addition to the numerous performances students are involved in, there is ample opportunity to perform at outside venues and take part in workshops by professional visiting artists.  The department and college links with performing arts agencies, studios and schools which also provide further professional opportunities including work based learning
